Exmouth, Western Australia

Exmouth, Western Australia. Few towns are situated in such a unique location. Bounded by a contrast of a fabulous, world-class marine park on one side, and rugged ranges on the other, this ideal setting makes Exmouth such a great place to visit.

The town is a mecca for fishermen, seeking those catches that they only dream about, which quickly become reality once they sink a line. Swimming with Whale Sharks, Snorkelling and diving the reefs, all those close encounters with nature you always wanted to do. We recommend hiring a boat or kayak to explore the magnificent marine environment, click here for details.

Western Australia History, Western Australia

Charted by the Dutch in the 1600s, the town of Exmouth is the newest in the whole of Australia. Although the region was explored further by the British in the 1800s, no official settlement was made.

The town can be dated from May 1963 when the Australian and US governments agreed to establish the $66 million Harold E. Holt US Naval Communication Station at North West Cape. From its earliest days it was always a military town with the Naval station opened on September 16, 1967. The population of the town peaked at around 4300 in the late 1960s but today there are less than 3000 people.
